Cuban Medical Brigade of 48 Specialists Arrive in Rwanda To Boost Country’s Healthcare

Rwanda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, extended a warm welcome to the Cuban Medical Brigade on Tuesday.

Comprising 48 specialized doctors and nurses, this brigade marks a crucial addition to Rwanda’s healthcare system, aligning with the nation’s 4×4 strategy aimed at reinforcing medical services across provincial teaching hospitals.

In July of 2023, the Government of Rwanda approved the 4×4 Reform, a visionary strategy aimed at quadrupling the number of healthcare workers in the country within the next four years to meet the WHO recommendation of at least 4 healthcare professionals per 1,000 population density.

The arrival of the Cuban Medical Brigade symbolizes a partnership rooted in expertise exchange and advanced medical care provision. Their presence is poised to not only augment Rwanda’s healthcare capabilities but also strengthen its training programs, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of skilled healthcare professionals.

Dr. Nsanzimana emphasized the strategic significance of this collaboration, highlighting the shared commitment to delivering quality healthcare services to all Rwandans, particularly in underserved regions. He expressed gratitude for the Cuban Medical Brigade’s dedication to supporting Rwanda’s healthcare goals, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing global health challenges.

On her part, Cuba’s Ambassador to Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, H.E Tania Perez Xiques, hailed the relations between Havana and Kigali. Rwanda and Cuba are celebrating 45 years of diplomatic relations.

The Cuban Medical Brigade brings a wealth of experience and specialized skills, ranging from critical care to surgical interventions.

Their deployment across provincial teaching hospitals reflects Rwanda’s proactive approach to decentralizing healthcare services, ensuring accessibility and quality care beyond urban centers.
