U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken held a phone conversation on Friday with Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi to address the ongoing crisis in eastern DRC.
During the call, Secretary Blinken expressed his appreciation for President Tshisekedi’s commitment to the Luanda Process, a regional peace initiative led by Angolan President João Lourenço. The Luanda Process aims to de-escalate tensions and promote stability in the conflict-ridden region. The Secretary highlighted President Tshisekedi’s willingness to participate in talks scheduled for December 15 as a positive step toward resolving the crisis.
Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ position that the M23 rebel group and the Rwandan Defense Forces must immediately cease hostilities and withdraw from their positions in eastern DRC. He emphasized the importance of concerted efforts to restore peace and security in the region, which has been plagued by violence and displacement.
The Secretary also urged President Tshisekedi to prioritize neutralizing the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a militia group notorious for its destabilizing activities in the region. This, Blinken noted, would be a critical move toward achieving long-term stability.
President Tshisekedi’s collaboration with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has offered his mediation expertise with M23, received commendation from Blinken. The Secretary underscored the significance of regional partnerships and the international community’s role in supporting peace initiatives.
The eastern DRC continues to face a multifaceted crisis, with armed groups, including M23, contributing to widespread insecurity and displacement. The ongoing tensions have also strained relations between the DRC and neighboring Rwanda, with accusations of cross-border involvement in the conflict.
The United States, through diplomatic engagement and humanitarian assistance, remains committed to supporting the DRC and regional partners in addressing the root causes of the crisis and fostering sustainable peace.
