The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly condemned the recent bombing of a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) health facility in Old Fangak town, Fangak County, Jonglei State, South Sudan, which occurred on Saturday, 3 May 2025.
In a statement released Sunday, the Chairperson expressed deep shock and dismay over the attack, which resulted in the tragic loss of lives, destruction of essential medical infrastructure, and the obstruction of civilians’ access to life-saving healthcare.
There have been at least seven deaths and 20 injured. South Sudan’s government is yet to comment on the incident.
Describing the incident as a flagrant violation of International Humanitarian Law, Chairperson Youssouf emphasized that such acts represent a serious affront to the principles of humanity and the protection of civilians in conflict zones.
He called on the South Sudanese authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the bombing and ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice without delay.
Reiterating the African Union’s solidarity with the people of South Sudan, the Chairperson urged all stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to the full implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
He expressed hope that peace, stability, unity, and national reconciliation would soon prevail across the country.
