Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, has held talks with the United States Deputy Secretary of State, Mr Christopher Landau with discussions focusing on trade and investment, migration, global health security and regional peace and security.

Ayebare described the meeting as “very productive”, indicating continued high-level engagement between Kampala and Washington on a range of bilateral and international issues.

“I was hosted by @DeputySecState. We had a very productive meeting that covered trade and investment, migration, global health security, regional issues and security cooperation,” Ayebare said.

The discussions brought together several areas that remain central to Uganda-US relations, including expanding economic ties and investment opportunities, managing migration-related issues and strengthening cooperation on global health security.

The two sides also addressed regional issues and security cooperation, areas of growing importance as Uganda continues to play an active role in regional peace and security efforts.

Trade and investment remain key elements of Uganda’s external economic diplomacy as the government seeks to attract investment, expand markets for Ugandan products and strengthen international partnerships under its broader economic transformation agenda.

Migration was also among the issues discussed, reflecting the importance of people-to-people links between Uganda and the United States, as well as wider conversations between African countries and the US on migration management and mobility.

Global health security featured on the agenda as well, an area that has gained renewed prominence following recent outbreaks and the need for stronger international preparedness, surveillance and response mechanisms.

On regional matters, the engagement comes against the backdrop of continuing security challenges in parts of East Africa and the Great Lakes region, where Uganda has maintained a significant role in regional security and stabilisation initiatives.

Uganda and the United States have historically cooperated on a number of security and counter-terrorism initiatives in the region, alongside diplomatic engagement on political and economic affairs.

Ayebare’s meeting with the senior US official is part of his early diplomatic engagements following his appointment and swearing-in as Foreign Affairs Minister, as Uganda seeks to deepen relations with key international partners.

The talks also underscore Kampala’s effort to maintain active diplomatic engagement with Washington across economic, security, migration and global policy priorities.

The meeting is expected to contribute to continued dialogue between the two countries on areas of shared interest, including strengthening economic cooperation, addressing emerging global challenges and promoting peace and stability in the region.
