The usually calm Soroti City is alive with anticipation today as thousands gather at the Soroti Sports Grounds for the grand homecoming celebrations of David Calvin Echodu, who is set to be officially unveiled as a candidate for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) position for the Eastern Region.
Scheduled to begin at 10:00am, the event is expected to be a political spectacle, drawing NRM leaders, youth mobilizers, cultural performers, and supporters from all corners of Eastern Uganda to witness what many are calling a historic day. Boda boda convoys, drumming processions, and yellow flags flying high are expected to fill the city for the event that is more than a welcome, it’s the launch of a serious political bid by someone whose popularity in the ruling NRM party is in the roof.
Although there are events that have been held to unveil his candidature, today’s function function carries significance as his camp are using a home turf to make their intentions crystal clear.
Echodu’s entry into the CEC race positions him in direct contest with the incumbent, Capt. Mike Mukula, a seasoned political heavyweight and long-time party figure. While Mukula’s influence remains considerable, Echodu’s supporters believe the time has come for new leadership that reflects the region’s youthful energy and development ambitions.
“This is not just a homecoming; it’s a sign of a generational shift. Echodu understands our challenges and has the intellectual and grassroots strength to take the Eastern Region forward. Known for his philanthropy, many see Echodu’s entry in the race as part of a transition process. He will also he in the race with Dr Musa Lumumba and Jacob Oboth Oboth.
