The European Union is set to impose sanctions on nine individuals and one entity associated with the offensive launched by the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to diplomatic sources.
These sanctions will include travel bans for the individuals, preventing them from entering the EU. Additionally, both individuals and the entity will face asset freezes within the EU.
The M23 rebellion has been a key factor in the ongoing instability in eastern DRC, with Kinshasa accusing Kigali of supporting the group—an allegation Rwanda has repeatedly denied. The EU’s latest measures come amid increasing international pressure to address the conflict and hold those responsible accountable.
More details on the identities of those sanctioned and the specific measures are expected to be released in an official EU statement.
