Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda on Saturday hosted H.E. Malik Agar, the Special Envoy from Sudan and Deputy Chairperson of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, along with his delegation at State House Nakasero.
During the meeting, Envoy Agar briefed President Museveni on the current situation in Sudan, which has been embroiled in a devastating conflict since April 2023.
The conflict, which pits the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) loyal to General Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, has resulted in the deaths of at least 14,000 people and the displacement of over 10 million others, according to United Nations estimates. The violence has particularly ravaged the Darfur region, with fears of ethnic cleansing if the RSF captures el-Fasher, a critical city of 1.8 million people and the last significant army stronghold in the area.

President Museveni’s engagement with Sudanese officials follows his recent efforts to mediate between the warring factions. His role as a regional leader and mediator is seen as pivotal in attempting to bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict that has brought widespread suffering and instability to Sudan.
Museveni’s involvement in Sudanese peace efforts is not new; he has previously met with leaders from both factions, advocating for dialogue and negotiation as the only viable paths to lasting peace. His meeting with Envoy Agar is a continuation of these efforts, as Uganda seeks to leverage its influence to help stabilize its neighbor to the north.
In a statement after the meeting, President Museveni expressed his support for Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council and reiterated Uganda’s commitment to aiding in the resolution of the conflict.
